A Triple birth is always triple joy!!

Today we woke up this morning to a addition of 3 kids!!!! To say that we were overjoyed is a total understatement!!

The first goats on our farm were the indigenous goats. We opted for these because the community told us that they would tolerate the hot climate dominant in the area.  By then, we did not even water; the farm workers having to travel far to obtain water for the goats.

True to their word, the goats remained strong during the dry weather. They would feed on the remaining bushes to stay alive and lost negligible weight, only to put it all back again during the rainy season. Their reproduction rate was normal and yes, they hardly fell sick. However, when taken to the market, the returns were too low!! We found that to make the project sustainable, we had to sell goats monthly!! Our fear was that with time, the numbers for sale would grossly out weigh what was being born on the farm!!

We researched. Asked several Veterinary Doctors resident in the area and they recommended that we introduce the boer goats. Then, whereas buying a local goat mature for reproduction cost UGX 70,000, a boer goat cost  UGX 300,000. The difference was huge!! The Veterinary Doctor then advised that we bring on board a good buck and a few does. He also suggested that we sell off all the existing bucks and any weak looking does from the indigenous stock. We did this, used the money from the sale, with a top up of course, to buy the boer goats.

Today, we are reaping the fruits from that exercise.
